Terms of service
The rules of the floor. Please read them, and if you are a parent, read them with your child.

Text shown [like this] is a placeholder that will be completed before launch.
1. About these terms
These terms are an agreement between you and [legal entity name], registered in [country] under number [company number], with its registered office at [registered address] ("Docea", "we", "us"). They apply to the Docea web app, mobile app where available, and this website (together, "the service"). By creating an account or using the service, you agree to them. Our privacy policy explains how we handle personal data.
If you are a consumer, nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under the laws of the country where you live.
2. Who can use Docea
- Learner accounts are for young people aged 7 to 17.
- A learner below the age of digital consent in their country may use Docea only once a parent or guardian has given consent, or a school has authorised it where section 5 allows. The age depends on the country (for example 13 in the US and the UK, 13 to 16 in EU countries, 17 in Brazil and 18 in India, South Africa and Australia), and is 18 for any country we have not reviewed. The full list is in our privacy policy.
- Learners at or above that age but under 18 may accept these terms and make their own privacy choices, and we still apply high-privacy defaults for them. We encourage them to read these terms with a parent or guardian.
- Parent, teacher, mentor and school official accounts are for adults aged 18 or over.
- You must give a true date of birth and country. Giving a false one to avoid parental consent breaks these terms.
3. Parental consent
- When a child below the age of consent signs up, the account is paused until a parent or guardian decides. The parent must use their own email address, not the child's.
- By giving consent, you confirm you are the child's parent or legal guardian, and you accept these terms on the child's behalf.
- You choose each use of your child's data separately, and nothing is pre-selected. The five internal choices are confirmed by email, with a follow-up confirmation a day later. Learning circles, mentor access and teacher access need the card check in section 4. In India, Brazil, South Africa, South Korea and China every choice needs the card check.
- You can change any choice, withdraw consent or ask us to delete your child's data at any time. Turning something off takes effect straight away. Withdrawing consent means your child can no longer use the parts of Docea that depend on it.
- If nobody decides within 14 days, the paused account and the details we collected to ask are deleted.
- You are responsible for the settings you choose for your child, such as time limits and quiet hours, and for supervising their use in a way that suits their age.
4. The card check
- To confirm an adult account holder is giving consent, we charge a small amount to a credit or debit card: 0.50 in US dollars, pounds or euros, depending on the child's country.
- The full amount is refunded straight away. You are not charged anything in the end. We email you to confirm the charge and the refund, and your statement shows both, marked DOCEA VERIFY. Depending on your bank, the refund can take a few days to appear.
- Prepaid cards are not accepted, because they do not show an adult account holder.
- Payments are processed by Stripe. We never receive or store the card number, its last four digits or the cardholder's name.
- The card check is not a subscription and does not sign you up for a paid plan.
- The card check is built but not switched on yet. Until it is, the choices that need it cannot be allowed.
5. Schools
In the United States, the United Kingdom, and EU and EEA countries, a school can authorise Docea for its pupils in place of a parent. A school that does so agrees that:
- it has been verified by Docea and has accepted our school data processing agreement;
- its official is authorised to act for the school, and confirms that pupils' data is used only for the school's educational purposes and never for any commercial purpose;
- it can authorise only tutoring, AI processing, memory and teacher access, and never analytics, service emails, learning circles or mentor access;
- teacher access it authorises reaches only teachers of its own classes;
- parents are told about the authorisation where we have their email, and a parent's choices override the school's: a parent can narrow what the school authorised, and withdrawing consent ends the school's authorisation for that child;
- its officials and teachers use a second sign-in step and keep their accounts secure.
Teachers who use Docea with a class that is not school-authorised need each learner's teacher access to be allowed by their parent (or by the learner, when old enough).
6. Accounts and roles
- Give accurate information, keep your password private and tell us at [email protected] if you think someone else has used your account. You can sign out of every device from the app.
- Each account has one role (learner, parent, teacher or mentor), and the role decides what it can open. Do not try to reach views or data your role or relationship does not allow.
- Parents and guardians are responsible for the settings they choose for their child, such as time limits, quiet hours and safety settings, and for supervising their child's use in a way that suits the child's age.
- Mentors may see a learner's data only through an invite that has been accepted and only if the learner's parent (or the learner, when old enough) has allowed mentor access. They must stop if either ends.
- Teacher, mentor and school official accounts must set up a second sign-in step before their first session.
7. The service
Docea offers AI subject tutors, voice and photo input, exam drills and readiness scores, a skill map and study plans, a memory vault, coding notebooks, parent controls, classes, mentoring, study circles and a tutor library. Syllabus outlines are provided for a set of curricula and are marked beta until reviewed by a subject expert; they are not official exam board material. We improve the service over time and may change or remove features. If a change significantly reduces a paid service you have already paid for, we will tell you and, where the law requires, offer a remedy.
Docea supports learning. It does not replace a school, a qualified teacher or professional advice, and it does not guarantee exam results.
8. AI-generated content
- Tutor replies, explanations, plans, feedback, readiness scores, drafted questions and debate responses are generated by AI. AI can be wrong, incomplete, out of date or inconsistent, even when it sounds confident.
- Check important facts, especially for exams, coursework, health, safety or anything with real consequences. Teachers should review AI-drafted questions before using them.
- Safety filters reduce the chance of harmful or unsuitable content, but no filter catches everything. Tell us at [email protected] if something gets through.
- Do not present AI output as your own work where your school or exam board does not allow it. Following those rules is your responsibility.
- AI output is provided for your personal learning. Similar output may be generated for other users.
9. Acceptable use
Keep Docea safe for children. You must not:
- bully, harass, threaten, groom or exploit anyone, or try to contact a child outside the relationships the service allows;
- post or ask for sexual, violent, hateful, self-harm-promoting or otherwise harmful content, or anything illegal;
- share another person's personal information without permission, or pressure a learner into sharing their own;
- impersonate someone, or create accounts with false information to get access to a child's data;
- try to get around safety filters, time limits, quiet hours, role boundaries or rate limits, or manipulate the AI into doing so;
- use coding notebooks to run malicious code, attack systems, mine cryptocurrency or use resources unfairly;
- scrape, reverse engineer, overload or probe the service for vulnerabilities without our written permission (report security issues to [email protected]);
- upload content that infringes someone else's rights, or use the service to cheat where that is not allowed;
- use the service, or its output, to build a competing product or train AI models.
10. Your content
You keep ownership of what you put into Docea: messages, answers, notebooks, posts, notes, questions and uploads. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, process and display that content only as needed to run and improve the service for you and the people you share it with, and to keep the service safe. This licence ends when your content is deleted, except for copies we must keep by law or for safeguarding.
We may remove content that breaks these terms or puts a child at risk.
11. Tutors you publish
If you build a tutor and publish it to the tutor library, you confirm you have the right to publish its instructions and materials, and you let other users add and use it. We may review, refuse or remove published tutors, especially where they are unsuitable for children.
12. Plans and fees
Pricing has not been set yet (see the pricing page). When paid plans are offered, the price, billing period, renewal, cancellation and refund terms will be shown before you pay, and payments will be handled by a payment processor. Consumers keep any statutory cancellation rights they have. [Subscription, renewal, cancellation and refund terms to be added when pricing is decided.]
13. Our intellectual property
The service, its software, design, curriculum content, question banks we provide and the Docea name and marks belong to us or our licensors. We give you a personal, non-transferable, revocable right to use the service in line with these terms. Third-party open-source software is used under its own licences.
14. Suspension and termination
- You can stop using Docea at any time and delete your account in the app, or ask us at [email protected]. A parent or guardian can delete their child's data from the Family area.
- We may suspend or close an account, or remove access to a feature, if we reasonably believe the account breaks these terms, puts a child or anyone else at risk, or if the law requires it. Where it is safe and lawful, we will tell you why and give you a chance to respond.
- We may end the service as a whole with at least [30] days' notice.
- After closure, your data is handled as set out in the privacy policy. Sections that by their nature should continue (such as liability and governing law) continue after the agreement ends.
15. Disclaimers
To the extent the law allows, the service is provided "as is" and "as available". We do not promise that it will be uninterrupted, error-free or that AI output will be accurate or suitable for a particular purpose. Nothing in this section limits rights consumers have by law, such as the right to services provided with reasonable care and skill.
16. Liability
- Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law.
- Subject to that, we are not liable for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable, for business losses, or for decisions made by relying on AI output without checking it.
- Subject to the above, our total liability to you for all claims relating to the service in any 12-month period is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in that period and [amount and currency].
- If you use Docea for a business or organisation, you agree to cover our reasonable losses caused by your breach of these terms. [Indemnity scope to be confirmed by counsel.]
17. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of [governing law], and the courts of [jurisdiction] have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer, you can also bring proceedings in the courts of the country where you live, and you keep the protection of its mandatory consumer laws. Please contact us first so we can try to resolve any problem informally. [Any arbitration or alternative dispute resolution terms for particular countries to be confirmed by counsel.]
18. General
- We may update these terms. For material changes we will give account holders reasonable notice before they take effect. If you do not agree, you can close your account.
- If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest still applies.
- We may transfer this agreement as part of a reorganisation or sale of our business; your rights under it will not be reduced.
- If we do not enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later.
